noteworthy nuremberg

A few weekends ago in December (yes this another late post), Nick caught the train from Hamburg and I caught it from Bochum and we met up in Nuremberg for the Christmas markets. Our trains were a bit crazy and unfortunately we were significantly delayed. When we got in, we headed to a little craft beer place. It was a very relaxed Friday night after a long week at work and we were very happy to be hanging out in such a Christmas-y city!

On Saturday we woke up and headed out to do Christmasy things :) but first we decided to check out Nuremberg for a while and see what the city was all about. We just walked around in the city and went up to the castle. We also checked out the gorgeous cathedral. Afterwards we went to the older Christmas market that had a handwork area where everything is handmade and it was so phenomenal to be able to see all of this. We bought way.too.many.things. After walking around for a a while we watched the HSV soccer match at a pub then headed out to the Christmas markets. The Nuremberg Christmas market is one of the oldest and largest in all of Europe! It is sure a sight to see! We saw so many sausages, so many sweets, so many ornaments and a ton of nutcrackers. If this does not put you in the Christmas spirit I honestly have no idea what could! They even had "partner city" stations and Atlanta was one of them! They had "southern" things or things that Atlanta is known for like coke products. It was pretty funny. After the market we had to eat some yummy food so we went to eat at the Ethiopian restaurant called Shashamane. Yes... in Germany.. an Ethiopian restaurant. It was a really interesting experience. You eat with your hands and we drank some passion fruit beer. You literally drank the beer out of this old looking wooden bowl (see some pics below!) Very unique experience and one I will not forget.

On Sunday we took a train to Bamberg to get some amazing rauchbier. This translates to smoked beer and it legit tastes like bacon. It is so insane. We went to three places and got a yummy German lunch. We also went to the Christmas market and bought the cutest little snowmen. After the last rauchbier place we took a stroll around the area where the government building sits along the river and took some great photos. Bamberg has a very nice old town. I had not heard much about this city but would highly recommend it to anyone who (a) loves beer and/or (b) lovessss European old towns. It is definitely a must see! The place you have to check out is Schlenkerla. It was superb. The other place we really liked was Braurei Spezial.
